Travel to Brandenburg

Although people often only refer to our city as "Brandenburg" the official name is "Brandenburg an der Havel". To add the name of our river Havel is to distinguish the city from the state of Brandenburg, which our city is a part of (by the way, the "v" in Havel is pronounced like the "f" in fish:).

In case you will arrive in Berlin by plane

Most of you will travel via "BER Berlin Brandenburg Airport (BER)" since this is the closest airport. The BER is situated in the South of Berlin within the State of Brandenburg.

If you want to get an idea about the public transport connections in and around Berlin

you´ll find a map with all lines https://www.vbb.de/en/driving-information/maps/

There are several possibilities to go from the airport to the city of Brandenburg by train, but none is direct and you need to change usually once to get on the regional train RE1 (Regionalexpress) to Brandenburg / Magdeburg. The whole trip from the BER to our city will roughly take 1,5-2hrs.

From the airport you take the train station "Flughafen BER – Terminal 1-2" which is conveniently placed underground in the airport. To go from there From to "Brandenburg Hbf" ("Hbf" means "Hauptbahnhof"= main station) you can use several regional trains, e.g.

• RE8 via Berlin Ostkreuz -> RE1 to Brandenburg Hbf

• RB22 via Potsdam Sanssouci -> RE1 to Brandenburg Hbf

• FEX via Berlin Hauptbahnhof -> RE1 to Brandenburg Hbf (ca. 2 hrs)

You can check departure / arrival times at https://www.bahn.com/en or via google maps when you arrive at the airport.

Train tickets: When using regional trains (RB / RE / FEX) the price for a single trip p.p. from the airport (but also from anywhere in Berlin) is about 8 €.

Please mind there are some connections including the more expensive IC trains, but this shouldn´t be necessary since there are plenty connections with regional trains.

At the airport you can buy tickets via a ticket vending machine or at the DB travel center (DB Reisezentrum). Or you may install the app VBB Bus & Bahn on your smartphone – this is usually very convenient but only available in German.

In case you will travel by train you might arrive at Brandenburg Hauptbahnhof (Hbf = main station) anyway. So, we hope to meet you there!

But just in case: For information about public transport within Brandenburg an der Havel, you can check https://www.vbbr.de/ or you try the app "VBB Bus & Bahn" (see footnote).
